Music at St Andrews

Music has always played an important part in the liturgy at St Andrew's, in order that as far as possible those parts of the Mass that should be sung, are sung, in accordance with the norms laid down in The General Instruction of The Roman Missal.

The Sunday 10.30 Mass usually has the most musical content, being led by a four-part choir and a team of four cantors.  The Credo is usually sung, in Latin.  The choir take a break during August.

The Sunday 8.30 Mass usually has the services of a cantor, except during August, with a sung Responsorial Psalm and Gospel Acclamation, and settings of the Ordinary of the Mass.

The Saturday 6.00pm Vigil Mass consists of hymns and simple congregational settings of the Ordinary.  At present we do not have a regular cantor at this Mass, but the door is open.......... !

On Holy days of Obligation that fall during the week, the 10.00am Mass has similar musical content to the Saturday Vigil Masses, while the 7.30pm Mass features the Choir and cantors, and usually a Latin plainchant setting of the Ordinary.

Accompaniment for all Masses is provided by a fine Viscount digital organ, installed in May 2008 with a custom-designed specification drawn up by our Director of Music in consultation with Viscount.

The Director of Music and Organist is Andrew Butler, who has been with us since 1993.  He is supported at holiday times by a willing team of deputies.
